Chromate
Mil-C-5541, 7.3.1of Mil-STD
171
Chromates are a conversion coating used to passivate Aluminum, Zinc and Cadmium plating. They coat the surface and slow down corrosion of the underlying metal. Clear coatings names include Irridite, chemical film and clear chromate. The yellow chromates are referred to as dichromate, yellow dichromate, or just yellow. The historic formulations of yellow chromate contained hexavalent Chrome so they were not RoHS compliant.
